Fairytales don't end like this

Memories and emotions flood over my body,
Smiling through the tears,
So much pain in the joy of our past.
There are so many ways I can see your face,
In each and every one you are wearing that smile,
I can still see it clear as day.
This is the way I choose to remember us,
The truth of your tears, a reality I refuse to face.
There is no way to forgive the mess I left,
And i will never ask you to.
As my failures continue to mount,
However large they may be,
They feel like nothing compared to the day I let go of you.

And of all the stories I tell,
Yours, ours, is still the greatest tale.
Yet, its a storybook written with an incompetent hand,
Where the pride of holding the pen outweighed the need to get it right,
It never gets to the point the villian is revealed.
Negating the lessons along the way,
Writing each page at such a pace I arrived at the end too early,
Leaving the girl with a broken heart when the hero failed to show.
The last page disappoints without its happy ever after,
Ending with nothing more than the words "I'm sorry".
