I think the following sentence would be difficult to understand by others, though I know what you mean as I've got scientific training ;)

Brilliant! And, just for the record, I don't have any scientific training but I totally got the lines that Yiyan pointed out. The Great Hadron collider has been spoken about so many times in so many places that I think a lot of the scientifically uninspired will still know what you mean. ( Didn't we think it might end the world when they said they were going to switch it on?) Â

They might not. Know that term. I did think of that but when I read some works of the antique type. There're some words on occasion I have had to lookup. Point well taken though!
