First Snow

The clouds were all filled with first snow on the way.

The wind blew the bare trees to an up and down sway.

The sun had set, to a darkish background,

the night seemed to wake, as the day bedded down.

To wake in the morning and lift up the shade,

The sun looked so bright-eyed, as the moon seemed to fade.

The glimmering white on the ground covered up,

As soft as the fur on a newly born pup.

The shovels they sounded like brushes on drums.

Hands without gloves froze from fingers to thumbs.

The white covered sidewalks, turned back to concrete.

The sand from the plows had now covered the streets.

But to look in the distance, at far away trees,

still lined with the white, from their tops to their knees.

You would think you were dreaming, of a place far away,

And wish until next year, this picture could stay.
