Free Cigarettes

I look down at my knees.
They are covered in black & purpleÂ
galaxies â
blood
slowly pooling
beneath freckled skin.
After a night of dancing
for strange men
with full pockets,
I am now watching a new friend ride his skateboardÂ
in the parking lot â
street lights igniting a fluorescent dream.
Beer in one hand,
cigarette in the other,
neither of which I bought myself.
Keep watch for moments you didn't expect.
They come and they fade
almost as fast
as the bruises.

Really beautiful. I love how simple it is while still delivering a very deep message to the reader. Doesn't feel forced, just real. Can't wait to read some more of your work.
Thank you for your words. I do tend to write about simple, more everyday things. Things I later discover represent bigger ideas or patterns in my life. Like here, fading bruises / brief moments in time. Glad you enjoyed.

Thank you! Much appreciated.Â
I loved this, you encapsulate such a beautiful nihilism we all experience in life. I can see myself within this poem, sitting on the falling lines of the stanzas and I knowing I have been here before. Well done x

What beautiful words to describe the way my poem made you feel. I'm sure you're a writer as well. I'm late to reply to your comment, but I wanted to say that you made me smile. Thank you.Â
