Good

It was in that southern state of Alabama in the year 1965
When he was trying to get good grades and trying to keep alive
The prejudice and racial slurs that he heard in every lecture hall
Were enough to make any man punch a hole through every brick wall
But then one day she saw him on a bench sitting by himself
She walked up to him and instead of being like everybody else
She introduced herself and even though her skin was white
That night in bed she touched his skin which was as black as night
They both started seeing each other every day after class
But the comments from her friends shattered her heart like glass
She couldn’t understand why people would say such mean things
Then there were tears from the power that each hate word brings
Her father and mother told her to stay away from that nigger
Her father said, “My hate for you is now growing bigger and bigger”
She couldn’t understand why people would judge a book by its cover
But all that she knew is that in her young life he was her greatest lover
Then they broke it off and vowed to go their separate ways
When they were apart it felt like years but it was just a couple of days
They vowed to find a partner who had their same color skin
Then one day they met and instead of saying, “How have you been?”
She said, “I miss you dearly” and he said, “I miss you too”
But then she said, “This is hopeless and I don’t know else to do”
He said, “Don’t worry because everything will be alright and okay”
He went to give her a hug but she violently pushed him away
She yelled, “We can’t be together even if we should”
“It is not meant to be and I’m making that understood!”
But then she asked that question that he thought she would forget
She said, “Tell me did you find a girlfriend yet?”
He said, “No” and then she smiled and said, “Good”
She smiled and said, “Good”
She smiled and said, “Good”
