Goodbye My Friend

I laid you out with tender care, the final time we would prepare.
Then gently bent to draw you in, to feel the rush of powdered sin.
I tried to relish every grain, to sear your memory in my brain,
to focus solely on your touch, give thanks for how you've been my crutch.
They want my love to turn to hate, they cannot see they're way to late.
What they do not realise, is your the one that told no lies,
whenever pain began to gnaw, you opened up another door,
allowing me to numb the ache, protecting me for my own sake.
Far too long we trod our path, blanked their worries, then their wrath.
Your constant gift to help me live, was all you ever had to give....
We share our little ritual, the feeling almost spiritual,
as slowly we release our grip, my goodbye falters on my lips....
but then I see the faintest light and know it's time to stand and fight.
So once again I thank you friend, for giving me the chance to mend,
you've made me stronger in my heart.
I'm ready now, for us to part.

It's the hardest thing in the world to turn away from addiction and I still struggle with the odd relapse. Getting stronger every day though. Thank you.x
