Goodbye Old Friend

The hole was deep enough
We lay him in it gently.
Wrapped in his big yellow blanket
that he snuggled himself into
when the cold reached the old age
of his bones.
Next to him we placed his big
silver bowl the carrier of
his sustenance in this world
his collar and leash in a plastic bag.
Free at last from the control of humans.
The sandy soil returned over him
carefully and with gentleness
still making a sound as it covered
his loved body.
There are sharper pains in this life
but this was one I will never forget.
The rest of the day we lived in silence
where are the pattering paws
that followed me constantly?
Missing he sound of him
flopping next to me
as I read in my chair.
Chores passing
the dragging time of the day.
A light misty rain fell that night
But it might have been my tears
