Poem -

"Groovy!!", said Josephine.

"Groovy!!", said Josephine.

' A backstreet tale ' (from 1940's New Orleans)

Her head was layin' real low
Listenin' to 'ol shiny blow
With colored people dancin', clappin'
Hey, 'ol Grady's got it happenin'
"So cool", scratched Josephine!
-----------------------------------------
The back streets bounce, they'd be thumpin'
Waitin' on heathens humpin'
Flyin' in the face of the feathered man
"Hey give me back my Cadillac!"
Grumbled,...Josephine!
------------------------------------------
"Now why a woman spend all night waitin'
Ain't like they be out back debatin'!'
Muttered the 'ol colored man at the bar
"I know she out there sellin' that tar!"
Thought,..Josephine!
------------------------------------------
Brother Billy by the stage door
Pursed his lipsΒ for his first born
His shining, glowin', music horn
"Let's jam , little sister girl!"
"Groovy!"..whispered Josephine!
-------------------------------------------
She lifted her oily, sweatin',Β head
Just in time to see the 'ol man dead
Deez dangerous times in da music scene
'Specially in the back streets of New Orleans
"Groovy!".. grimaced Josephine!
--------------------------------------------
Her head fell back onto the bar
She tasted the numb of that China tar
Well the hell with cops with whiskey breath
'Cuz God is dead and life's a test
But not me....... thought Josephine!
--------------------------------------------
She'd dreamed a dream, that same 'ol dream
Ever since hustlin' at age thirteen
She woke broken and cuffed, hospital room
Visioned the 'ol man's horn blowin' a tune
Could hear the new born blues
From last night's heavy scene
"Groovy!"........ screamed Josephine!

YES GREG!!...... you're right ~ tar is heroine and in the back streets of 1940's New Orleans it ran rampant!!..... getting hold of many of my favorites like Billie Holiday for one!!...... I'm still working on this ~ like many of my writes I just need to get the bones down on paper and then come back in a month or two to gain perspective for the editing process!!.....thanx for this G!!......peace n stuff!!.......T xo ??✴❀

Hi Tony, I really enjoyed this one. Like Tina said it could be a song, Bob Dylan like. If it's unfinished then I'll definitely be looking forward to the finished version.

My Dear Tony,

I know stories about a lady
Her name was Josephine
The singer, last name Baker
Star of the 30's music scene

.
They loved her over in Paris
She wooed them with her songs
She aided the French Resistance
To try and correct what she thought was wrong

.
My Father had some records
Way back when I was young
We listened to them playing
Such lovely notes she sung

Love,
Larry xxx

Five stars for you dear Tony, what melody, nostalgia and cadence! I almost believed it to be cherished memories of mine, but no, the idea of me wasn't even conceived back when this takes place. That's the strength of this write. It feels genuine, it feels like yesterday, such a sweet and peculiar era.Β
