Poem -

Guarded

He thinks he’s stormed the castle

Believes he’s won my heart-

And seen into the dungeon’s depths

Beheld each work of art.

He’s under the impression

He’s forged a union strong

If he only knew reality:

He couldn’t be more wrong.

My heart is in a golden case

And placed inside a chest

Guarded by the tallest tower

With security, the best.

The tower does not stand alone

Within a fortress it resides

The fortress walls, immense and strong

With trenches on all sides.

Beyond the trenches, water-filled

Expands a wilderness vast

A wilderness crossed by….

Not a single suitor past.

He thinks he’s stormed the castle

Believes he’s won my heart

In reality he stands so far

So far, far from the field-

He’d need a telescope to see

The heart that I’ve concealed.

He knows the shallow depths

He knows the looks and laughs

He knows some characteristics

So his confidence he casts.

But my heart is in a golden case

And placed inside a chest

Guarded by the tallest tower

With security, the best.
