He Taught Me

He Taught Me

He taught me how to stand when I feel alone.
He taught me that his heart would forever be my home.
If within these moments I feel I want to die, I know if I do not give up he’ll teach me how to fly.
He taught me when to listen and when to shut my mouth.
He taught me how to sing and dance even as the pain ran about.
He taught me from a whisper the way that we should talk.
He taught me how to crawl around until I learned to walk.
He taught me how to laugh when I feel I want to cry.
He taught me to remember life, would keep going by.
He taught me how to see myself through another’s eyes.
He taught me how to give my life as if it were the tithe.
He taught me how to fight like a soldier, love like a saint, to bow like a servant without using restraint.
He taught me when to ask.
He taught me when to wait.
He taught me how to trust his hands were the ones that held my fate.
He taught me when to contain my emotions and when to set them free.
He taught me when to test my heart and when to leave it be.
He taught me how to love the scars that were never mine to claim, because even the deepest marks would all heal the same.
I can get through life and all it’s masking pride.
I know when to leave the shore and dare to dance the tide.
If ever I find myself stuck in an unforgiving sea, I know how to find my way back because he taught me.
