Heroes Of Yesterday

Do you remember long ago, the biggest battle we ever saw,
Where all the husbands and sons, went away to fight a war,
The husbands knew it was their duty, to right the many wrongs,
The sons went over for adventure, and one day be sung in songs.
In the early morning darkness, before the morning light,
Before the firing of our guns, before the coming fight,
A lone bugler stood steadfast, as he sounded the warring call,
And there sat the unknowing Commanders, a lot of their men today will fall.
Do you remember the soldiers in trenches, the whistle was their cue,
To leap up over the trench walls, kill everything is what they'd do,
But resistance in the form of gunfire, cut a lot of soldiers down,
Which diminished the numbers dramatically, not as many now around.
The stretch of land was hostile, between the trenches and their goal,
They had to run and dodge all the lead, that would put them in a hole,
The explosions were ruthless, raining down from high above,
No time to think of home right now, no time to think of love.
Can you see the end in sight my son, when will this fight end,
You've seen the casualties mounting up, you saw your dying friend,
If the war doesn't kill you, the many diseases probably would,
So you'd dig your heels in and fight, as hard and as long as you could.
Mrs Doris Tuffnel, was knitting in her favourite chair,
She heard a knock apon her door, when she answered it no one there,
She looked down on the doormat, a telegram lay all alone,
Her son performed the ultimate sacrifice, her son wasn't coming home.
These men fought for our freedoms, and the way that we live today,
With blood and tears and determination, and with their lives they would pay,
For they fought for our beautiful country, they went over there to protect,
At least we can remember them on Anzac Day, it is a day full of RESPECT.

Well done Glen,a difficult subject well related, liked and pinned.
Thanks a lot john, i am glad you liked it
This is so well written. Bringing to life the many complex emotions, reality, hardships of life back then. With no disrespect to men or woman of today but those men had something about them that was hard, hidden and yet with all that in their mind's eye they loved. Bravo...you penned this in honor of all.. the warriors in the field and the warriors at home knitting..waiting.. xo
Thankyou Tracey, i absolutely loved your comment and the truth you spoke of in them, they did have a special drive back then, and the hardships the women had back at home trying to make ends meet, standing proud and running things whilst everyone had gone away, also helping in the war effort themselves and making a difference, thankyou once again
Thanks cherie for your kind words,, it seemed like a completely different era, a country coming of age
This is a great reminder, Glen, of the ultimate sacrifice made by so many, one we can't really fathom unless we've been in those shoes... Thank you for this. Keep up the great work!*!*!
