His Garden Pal

Like his shadow
The black bird follows him,
It’s head cocked to one side,
Beady black eye lookingÂ
intently, inquisitivelyÂ
The deep treaded garden boot placed firmly on the old spade,
A shove of body weight, The sound of mud on metal
Well weathered leathery dirty hands rocking the cracked wooden spade handle forward
& back, forward & back
Black bird hops in closer,
As the soil is heaved & dumped onto the ever growing pile
A sweaty brow is wiped,
An arched back rubbed,
straightened with a sigh of pain,
A luke warm cuppa grabbed off the bin top
Grey brown worms wriggling in the clay soil,
Their dance catching the eye of black birds attention,
His yellow beak pointedly ready to strike,Â
contrasts against his coal black feathers
The spade becomes a leaning post,
cuppa tea is slurped,Â
Blackbird ceases the moment,
One lightening stab in the soil,
A worm hanging each side of the beak
“Enjoy your dinner blackie, my feathered friend”
Bellowing belly laughter fills the cool garden air
Black bird, his shadow,Â
His garden palÂ

Wow TRACEY!!...this piece of poetic prose is truly compelling....the imagery created in the minds eye of the reader is crystalline......perfectly etched....like Kei Kei said.....you could hear the shovel, smell the mud on metal, see the worms,.....It is an exceptional piece of writing!!…...ALL STARS!! & PINNED!!……..well conceived and BEAUTIFULLY delivered!!…….LOVE & ROCKETS!!…...T xo : )
Thank you so so much Tony. I’m delighted you liked it & pinned it. To place the reader directly into the heart, soul & moment of the surroundings is just what I hoped I’d deliver. A poets dream is achieved when that happens isn’t it. Much love & keep safe xx
My Dear Tracey,
This is avian imagery at its best. Loved it, pinned it! I give you a Haiku.
Blackbird is singing
In the bright and blazing sun
Me and my shadow
All my love,

Hi Tracey, I hope you are very well. A wonderful write that reminds me of a dear old friend in his beloved garden and allotment. I´ve witnessed this scene many times, very moving and very real. A very powerful descripitive piece that provokes the emotion of memories. This is writing at it´s very best, a talent for us all to aspire to. Thank you for sharing and filling my thoughts with a much loved friend. xx
Awww Tony that is so lovely. To evoke those memories of your friend is so special to hear. My poem was inspired by my childhood, seeing my old neighbour in his beautiful garden, digging & planting & weeding. Every day without fail he was out there. & I remember like yesterday the blackbird following him everywhere. Thank you for your lovely appreciation ? x
