"Home for Christmas"

"Home for Christmas" by Jeremey Peterson
Thinking back when Grandpa went to work drilling' oil.
He was coming home for Christmas, here to Tennessee.
Oh how I can remember that year, such a long time ago.
The wind was blowing hard through the tall willow trees.
There seemed to be a lot of extra snow.
That lonely Christmas Eve.
The weather was getting so cold,
that some folks just couldn't believe.
Some bundled up tight near the stove,
to drink warm milk, and peppermint tea.
On his way home grandpa met a man
who was down on his luck.
The fellow asked for a ride in Pa's warm cozy truck.
They headed up North in the mud and the muck.
But the truck went off the road, and the wheels got stuck.
They stood outside for what seemed like hours,
wishing they had a meal and a nice hot shower.
Just then a car passed by.
They tried flagging em' down, but they didn't stop,
and your grandpa wondered why.
No body deserves to get left on the side of the road at night.
The temperature was dropping, and there was a chance they could die.
When all the the sudden the vehicle turned around,
It was an Old farmer named Joe and his nappy hound.
He said, "jump in fellas I'll take you to the house.
Soon they arrived, and the farmer said to his wife, "look what I found!"
Take a seat boys, the old farmer said.
"My wife is a good cook, and she'll make sure you get fed."
So they took off their shoes, and they pulled up a seat.
The farmer's wife warmed up leftover stew and some cornbread to eat.
"Now where are you boy's headed?" said the old farmer Joe.
And how in tarnation did you get stuck out here in the snow?
Your grandpa was a gentleman and always replied with a smile.
He said, "I'm going back home to Tennessee to see my kids and my wife."
I've been at work in the oil fields, for months, down south.
Just trying to make a living, and put food in their mouths.
Then your grandpa asked "Can you take me back to my truck, so I can get it fixed?
Life is't easy when you're raising five kids!
The old famed turned and said,"I can do better than that son!"
I'll give you mine she's only been driven once,
She's a sturdy ride, and she'll do just fine.
It was a brand new car,
the Chrysler Airstream,
straight off the factory line.
You're Grandpa said, "Well if that's what you want to do."
"I need to get home for christmas sir, and that's one offer I won't refuse."
So They finished their meal and then they shook hands.
The old farmer Joe said "Hurry up and get home, as fast as you can!"
Out the door you pa went to get that car,
it was waiting in the barn.
He started it up and sped away
from that old southern farm.
He drove all night on one tank of gas.
And your grandpa made it in time for Christmas.
He was home at last.
We all sat around to hear your Grandpa
tell the story while kneelin' down on our knees.
Laughing and cheering as we opened our presents
from underneath the Christmas Tree.
He made it home for Christmas.
That winer year back in 1933..
