How To Write A Poem

How To Write A Poem

Will your poem stand the test of time?
It has to be good it doesn't have to rhyme.
Some people think of writing one,
Simply take your time it can be done.

Use words like God love heart and divine,
Readers cherish these for they are so fine.
My favourite poet is Ella Wheeler Wilcox,
She's forever a poetry genius voice-box.

For you it might simply be Shakespeare,
So keep paper pen or quill quite near.
Write it simple write it neat,
Write it honest don't ever cheat.

You can make it happy you can make it sad,
Please write it good don't write it bad.
You can use a phrase that's fine and gleaming,
And insert a word with a double meaning.

Words are your friends to pick and choose,
Assort them right and you can never lose.
You can think of a story that's rich and thick,
Fingers crossed that should do the trick.

Don't over-indulge don't guild the lily,
It'll be a mess and read quite silly.
Keep all your notes don't throw them away,
You may spot something you missed yesterday.

Look back on them at your own leisure,
For they may contain a hidden treasure.
So write with love write with passion,
Write it in your own unique fashion.

Haven't a clue knowing where to start?
My mother taught me always follow your heart.
It could be a great classic it might fall flat,
At least you've tried and what's wrong with that.

I hope it catches my eye one day,
And if it's for sale I'll gladly pay.
So strive and aim to set your poem high,
Perhaps a message on which people rely.

I wish you well all the very best,
So start writing now you know the rest.
They say there's a book in everyone,
There's at least a poem so have some fun!

Dedicated to my late mother Margaret.
