I Dreamed I Was Old

Villanelle

I Dreamed I Was Old

I dreamed I was old when I was a child,
The sun’s crimson hues died as moon was born,
To drown me in muse: “What before me lied?”

Colossal, gnarled trees, poised naked, leaves wild,
As I, an old man, wrinkled cheeks and worn,
I dreamed I was old when I was a child.

Cosmic seas above soon winked me blind,
As I witnessed scenes of cheerless clouds torn,
To drown me in muse: “What before me lied?”

Then a cherubim soon summoned and sighed:
“O wise fool, old child, you are in your dawn!”
I dreamed I was old when I was a child.

“I am old,” I screeched, “with a beard wild!”
But the cupid laughed and blew in his horn,
To drown me in muse: “What before me lied?”

And so, I awoke and, bewildered, cried,
Then swept back asleep, cheeks in tears adorn,
I dreamed I was old when I was a child,
To drown me in muse: “What before me lied?”
