I Hate Nightmares

Echoing in my dream
I rise up through slumber
Like a swimmer coming up from deep water
Breaking for air
Wild eyed and full of adrenaline
What was I dreaming of?
Oh yeah
The same old monster chasing me dream
The one where I keep running through a maze
Mirrors and doors and hallways
I can hear his mad hot  breath
In loud explosive sounds andÂ
Feel its hot furtive air
On my neck
I can not look back
If I do he will grab me and..
Well when I was small
I always had to cajole it fromÂ
Devouring me
He would corner me in this labrynth
I small and defenseless
Would be staring down the snout
Of some horrific beast or robot
That had me dead to rights
Pleading that I was too skinny
OR that I would taste rotten
Holding out a thin childs arm
Wide eyed and innocent... and then
KICK the bastard in the gut!!
Run like hell and ..
More than half the time it would work.
THe other half.. well I do not remember
Back to the drawing board

great poem
Hi Dagnis, hope you are very well. A great write full of vivid nightmarish images and expression of how vulnerable we are to dark thoughts. I don´t suffer from nightmares, the awake hours are scary enough, :) I am enjoying reading your poems. Thank you for sharing. x
