I Made Mistakes

I Made Mistakes

I Made Mistakes
(Apology to my chidren)

When your children tell you things you never knew
about the mistakes you made that you can’t undo.
You love them still with all your heart
even when it feels it’s being pulled apart.
All your crying and all your tears,
well-meant apologies simply fall on deaf ears.
As it does not make them feel more sane
nor does it take away their pain.
They need to holler, need to shout
and let you know what they’re about.
Tell you about their frustrations,
so you can make some reparations.
And it is you who should suffer
to help them grow and recover.
Help them climb that high steeple
and make them bigger, better people.
Mistakes are made, everywhere,
it doesn’t mean that you don’t care
or loved them less, in any way.
You adored them from that very first day.
And you are human, also still learning.
Perhaps the child in you, still yearning
for approval that you never had
or lack of love, made you so sad.
And that we all should understand
that when you take another’s hand,
a simple gesture, yet re-assuring,
that can become so enduring.
To let them see, that you are knowing
because their grief is clearly showing.
That you’re reaching out, forgiving
for what else is there in living?
If I cannot say and smile
I am not perfect, not by a mile!
I got it wrong, but I’ll try better
and I’ll write it down, here, in this letter….
Yes, mistakes were made, everywhere
but it never meant that I did not care.
