I WAS THERE

I was there from the startÂ
And I was there when your life fell apartÂ
I remember holding your hand through the withdrawalsÂ
And I remember all those late night phone calls
I cried with youÂ
When I told you what your suicide would doÂ
And I promised never to lie to youÂ
I rather be honest than collide with youÂ
But I was thereÂ
When everyone else walked away, I caredÂ
I really loved youÂ
I never once judged you
But I wish I could have done moreÂ
I wish I had that magic wand and found a cure Because life hasn’t be the sameÂ
Everything about my life has changedÂ
I look to my side and you’re no longer next to meÂ
I look at my phone and you’re no longer texting me
But I was thereÂ
When you felt your life was going wrong and nothing seemed fairÂ
And I remember wiping tears off your faceÂ
I remember telling you to stay strong every time we embracedÂ
And I wish I had that magic wand and found a cureÂ
I just wish I could have done moreÂ
When I was there!

This is a really really touching write x
Thank you so much. I actually wrote this poem from a story told to me while I’m out doing outreach in Kensington Philadelphia.Â
Bet that us a really interesting line of work Morris...you probably got a lot of stories to tell ..thanks for sharing x
Well written! You have exactly the right rhythm going on here through the words. It tells a gritty story — a different side of "love and loss" that poets often write about x
