In memory of the blackbird
Tribute to Francis Ledwidge, Irish WW1 poet 1897-1918

Blackbird still your spirit flies
amongst the Boynes green beauty
warmth of verse in summer's sun
as nature does its duty
Blackbirds song still calling out
aesthetic beauty amongst the mundane
the little boy has long since passed
your song is shelter in the rain
Blackbird here your perch still stands
though war took you across the seas
your songs hailed heroes but not you
carried along in summer's breeze
Blackbird though you're long since gone
your mortal matter in Passchendale
your mind was shared for verse to flourish
in beauty's valley your soul will hail.

A fantastic tribute to a great poet who died way too young. I have read his poem The Dead Kings (I think that was what it was called). It's an outstanding poem.
Great writing x
