City Living

I walk around the city
Where millions live interdependently
Coming and going; I watch
And note the people that I see

The blind woman with her white stick
And guide dog,
The homeless girl reading a book
The student browsing the library
And the street traders who cook

Crepes and beef burgers
Hot dogs, curries and sauce
Then there’s the Big Issue seller
Who goes largely ignored.

The street preachers
And bible sellers
Praising the Lord
An occasional ambulance passes
Heading for a hospital ward.

And of course there are those who
Walk along staring at their phone
Surrounded by strangers, yet,
Never quite on their own.

I like to mingle with people
Drinking in independent cafes.
I’ve just had a hot dog from a vendor,
Now I’m sipping a latte.
