Innocent

Innocent

He was stopped by the police
,while he was crossing the street at the traffic light
They had their guns out and had him surrounded
Then they put handcuffs on him
and read him his rights said that he is wanted

He told them he didn’t do anything
and wonder what was going on
why they were arresting him, he doesn't have a clue
this has to be a big mistake
This is crazy ,it just can't be true

They take him down to the station and put him in a lineup
Then they come in the room and say to the other five men
That they are finished and they can go
But he has to stay

then they told him that he was being charged for sexual assault
and that the victim positively identified him
and he has one phone call if he so chooses to use it ,so when his mother got his call
she dropped the phone and started to cry

his mother had no money to hire a lawyer
she had to depend on a public defender from the city
who didn’t want to fight the case ,to prove he was innocent
and he left when he didn’t want to cop a plea

so he stands in front the judge and tells him that he's innocent
and he was home alone that night
but the words fell on deaf ears
and no one believes him

why did she accuse him of this crime
When he never saw her in his life before
The jury reaches a verdict and says that he was guilty
And they sentence him to 25 years or more

He breaks down in court and shouts β€œ I,M INNOCENT β€œ
His mother screams out Jesus name and she cries
As they lead him away
He keeps saying β€œ I'm innocent” I'm innocent
today it makes fifteen years since he is in jail
and his mother got sick and she passed away
she always knows that her son was wrongly accused
and just before she closes her eyes she calls his name and said a prayer

Then one night while he was watching TV
He sees there is a new technology
name DNA testing, that can prove
If someone is innocent or if they are guilty

so he asks for a lawyer and he got a new trial
the DNA proves he was innocent and his conviction was overturn
15 years of his life was taken away
Years that can never be return

The woman who accuses him said that she's was sorry ,as the guilty one confesses in court
But he just looks at her and walks away.
he went to his mother's grave that afternoon
And tells her how sorry he was, to have caused her so many years of grief

Today there are many innocent people
Still in jails around the world today
Wrongly accused of crimes they didn’t commit
And their freedom is unjustly taken away

He sits on the front porch of his home
For the fist time in fifteen years,as the rain began to fall
He walks out and stands in the rain
Today he is a free man,and tomorrow a new life began

He's a free man today, but what a price he paid
To have your freedom taken from him
To be confined behind the prison walls
For a crime, he didn't do

Those proven to have been wrongfully convicted
through post-conviction DNA testing
spend, on average, more than 14 years behind bars.
The agony of prison life and the complete loss of freedom
are only compounded by the feelings of what might have been

, but for the wrongful conviction. Deprived for years
of family and friends
and the ability to establish oneself professionally,
the nightmare does not end upon release.
With no money, housing, transportation, health services
or insurance, and a criminal record

that is rarely cleared despite being pronounced innocence,
the punishment lingers long after innocence has been proven.
States have a responsibility to restore the lives
of the wrongfully convicted to the best of their abilities.

This simple poem is dedicated the innocents
Who are wrongly accused and sits in jails
You got to be strong and keep hope
That one day, brothers and sister the truth will prevail
