Joan of Leeds

Joan of Leeds was an independent lass.
A historic exemplar of the past.
Her fourteenth century family said
To a nunnery with thee
Joan of Leeds fervently disagreed.Â
Entered into a Benedictine order
she swore she would be free.
To be divorced from God you must be dead
so dead she decided to be.
Her sisters buried her
or, rather her in effigy.
Sisters are sisters after all
they knew who she needed to be.
In 1318 Cardinal Melton condemned her
for seeking carnal lust.
Joan of Leeds laughed out loud.
She thought that that was just.

Poor old Joan she was caught I believe and sent back!! quite an ingenious plot to escape a life of chastity and poverty and how clever of you to chose such an unusual subject..a really fun read and not only that but awakening the readers taste in history. Well done young man - yet another triumph!! xx
Ah, Lady Lodigiana, named and condemned but as far as I can find never found and returned. Cardinal Melton commanded her to return to the order in a written edict to the Benedictines but once gone she was a ghost. I think this story hides an epic love story. For the entire convent to collude in her deception, at least fifteen women, they had to believe she needed to be free. That hints at true love to me.
As I'm sure you have gathered by now I love history and I have a new book called "Histories" due out in the next few weeks. I can still slip this one in 'cos I'm still waiting for the illustrator to bring me first proofs. Exciting times dear friend.
