Left To Their Own Devices

Left To Their Own Devices

I'm lonely, freedom is not always so wonderful,
did the devil find some work for idle hands to do,
pushed to one side, I painted the fence indigo blue,
it was fortuitous when you said that you liked it too.

There used to be time but now there is little left;
once I was told; 'I don't care how long it really takes,'
'We want four cinemas instead of the usual fakes,
asked how long, 'I don't know,' then you're fired mate.

They said today is a 'free' day, you can go see the ruins,
buried in lava at Pompeii, left to their own positions,
or maybe caught making love, no time to make decisions,
they came before death and ignored all the superstitions.

It was just right, not left, a fine array of occupations,
'Did you make that, ' Yes, on my own I had spiritual visions.
