Light

It plays in patterns on the grass,
sometimes the pictures it makes are clear,
others are a mess.
But that is the beauty of it.
Sitting in the shade of a tree,
watching birds fly gracefully,
the sun playing off their iridescent feathers.
Sleeping in a darkened room,
breathing evenly as the dawn breaks through,
that is beauty too.
But--,
What would day be like if there was no night?
The absence of light,
the change from the sun to the wake of the moon and stars.
Would the sun be as precious?
Would colors mean as much without the contrast to shades of gray?
What would we fear if there was no lasting darkness where the monsters can hide?
