LIVING BELOW THE POVERTY LINE

He was a man living below the poverty lineĀ
Not particularly great and certainly not fine
Usually he's found propped up against a wall
Bent over double like he's just about to fall

I know what you all must no doubt be thinkingĀ
Found alcohol somehow and been drinkingĀ
This dear friend is totally inaccurate and untrue
The reason is that he is ashamed to look at you

He staggers wall to wall and then finds a skip
Hoping that a disused meal somebody did tip
He can't afford to be fussy if it's hot or coldĀ
Food to him is far more important than goldĀ

The skip today has wealth in such great store
An old blanket is there and also something more
For he notices a coat that's made to measureĀ
Today is a day he will look back on with pleasure
