Lizzie Borden Took An Axe...
Lizzie Borden took an axe,
And gave her mother forty whacks,
When she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one.
The police arrived on the scene,
Seeing Lizzie sweet and serene.
Two butchered bodies they did find,Β
Hack handiwork ofΒ insane mind.
In court the judge did decree,
Lizzie's innocent and set her free.
Parents wealth she now possessed,
Murder's easy her mind confessed.
When in hell the devil asked,
Did you perform this grisly task.
Take a chance an axe give me,
Grab a nap then wait and see...

wow this is grizzly good!
Thanks Lisa and glad you enjoyed reading it and very generous of you also.
And never knew she was proven innocent until recently.
For heard the first verse (which is anonymously penned and thankfully copyright free)Β as a kid and thought she was a nutcase loony and went to prison/funny farm for doing it.
But that was never the case.
Thanks again Lisa and respect to you.Β

Hey SHAUN!!.....yeah....one never knows what one is capable of until returning from a seriously fulfilling bit of somnambulism!!.....smiles.....VERY clever dear poet brother!!......and constructed with a great sense of poetic timing,,,,reads VERY well aloud!!.......ALL STARS!!......well crafted!!.....LOVE & ROCKETS!!.......T xoΒ :Β )
Tony!! At last we meet!! And thank you for your comments and uplifting as always.
Just a bit of horror hokum to make one's heart beat faster.
I hope all is well with you and those around you also in these uncertain times.
And have tomorrow off to visit your poetry neighbourhood (just touching base later tonight).
And you mention reads very well aloud, I just do a timing measure in my head and if it feels stetΒ I roll with it.
And a huge of fan of Lisa (POETESSDARKLY) for she writes in that less is more, cut to the chase, stripped down bare bones style, I cherish and enjoy reading.
Anyway I digress and good to hear from you my poetry brother and members like yourself raise my spirits and ALWAYS inspire me and others here also.
Respect to you Tony and this so so poet thanks you.

Thank you Shaun so kindly. Px
Shaun awsome poem
and yes she did itΒ
and got away with it
her life after was
never the same
bec others knowΒ
she did it and after
no one trustedΒ
her aginΒ
Β
Greg I agree 101% she bumped them off and got away with it.
She and her sister moved away and no townsfolk spoke to them.
When she died in 1927 she was worth nearly $5,000,000.
Murder pays.
Especially parricide.
And on the day of the murders she burnt her dress and took a bath!
It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out why.
Thanks Greg and be visiting yours soon.

Yikes Shaun, I remember this and the verse. But you took this to another level and gosh did my skin crawl beautifully π such a talent my friend, to pen with gruesome undertones that truly tickle the readers skin and cause those good old goosebumps to rise. Splendidly worded and the rhyming impeccable π you deserve more stars for wielding this one βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ
Your good friend Gwen x
Wow Gwen! And many thanks to your good self and with comments like that you can visit again.π
This poem's first verse is one I learnt as a kid and it was called a 'skipping rope' poem, like London Bridge Is Falling Down and Ring O Ring Of Roses,
which is cheerily about the Black Death.
And until last year I never knew she got away with it, thought she ended up in the loony bin or prison.
Even wrote a verse of her in prison swinging an axe (there's a surprise),
but scrapped it, due to the truth behind her gruesome history story.
Thanks again Gwen and it's good to be back and read uplifting comments like yours.
Be visiting and reading you soon my friend.
Your good friend Shaun. x

Always a pleasure to find you have posted a poem my friend :) I hope life is treating you well xΒ
Life is good Gwen and hope it is the same for you at this juncture in time.
Shaun. x.
Your poem proves some people are forced to use an axe, and others deserve one for their I'll treatment of others. Great read.Β
Β
In the cheerless murky world of poetry a sharpened axe is a necessity.
And sometimes in life, the trick is not getting caught...so bury them scattered and deep!!!
Thanking you kindly Liliana for your comment and how right you
AmenΒ
I love what you've fine here! The poem reads extremely well x
Tina many thanks and God forgive I loved writing those last three verses.
And she I believe, did it, beyond any shadow of doubt and got away with it.

Flippin heck mate .. now this, is the very stuff that used to keep me awake at night and sleep under my mattress as a kid .. I remember well the legend, (if that's the write word) of Lizzie Borden & that little rhyme about the axe still gives me shivers .. Definitely not my kind of girl .. although she did get away with it .. didn't she ..
All in all, bloomin bril my friend and once again, I aint talking fish ...Β AGT's
Neville :)
Nev, the first verse is the legendary poem and soooo glad you know of it, for in work for so many don't know of Lizzie or said verse.
Not my kind of girl either, prefer them a little less bloodthirsty in fact far less, but some do carry an axe to grind.... (sorry about that) couldn't resist it.
Thanks again Nev and...
I read a poem of in your recent poetry book Cotton Girls & Paper Chains and the line 'She was as sincere as a hangman's good morning.'
leapt off the page at me.
Loved reading that for I have never heard it if it out there.
To be honest I can't remember the poem now but it'll come to me.
So thanks Nev for your comment and all your damned great poetry as well.
Shaun.
You are so very bloomin welcome Shaun .. and I am a very happy chappy :)
