Lost Lights

Lost Lights

Once my life
was like a Christmas tree
thousands of pinpricks of lights
covered me as I shone brightly.
so beautiful so breathtaking.
Then they started to fade
one by one at first.
It happened as I
learned how to lie.
No mom I did not smoke.
a few lights went out
No dad I never do drugs.
A whole branch would fade.
It got worse later.
No honey I stopped gambling.
I am working late tonight sweetie.
No I am not having an affair.
Branch after branch
of my lights faded.
She left me of course.
Now as I walk alone
in the dark rainy city streets.
I look at my reflection
in the passing shop windows.
All my lights are faded out.
I am dark as the night.
Except if you look very closely.
You may see a few tiny lights
flickering almost faded
but still there trying to glow.
They are around my heart.
