Mama saw a Dead Man

My mama arrived home
Asked why it was so quietĀ
I shrugged
Scrolling with my earbuds in
She said: I saw a dead man today
She been going down Grand Prairie Parkway
And a cop car went flying past
It wasn’t chasing someone
So there must be a crash
She went on drivingĀ
Turning the corner - on her way
One car had its front endĀ
HAD its front endĀ
That was smashed like a tin can
And another sat a few feet away
Side slammed in and window shatteredĀ
His seatbelt
A protector of lifeĀ
Still on
Sat slumped over the wheel
And didn’t moveĀ
...Ā
I asked:Ā
You’d think theyā€˜d take him out
Of the ruined metal on tires
But waiting on the EMT’s was a priority
Couldn’t move him until they pronounced:Ā
Dead
I wondered who he’d been
Didn’t know what he’d looked like
...Ā
That’s twice that I’ve seen a dead manĀ
That’s what my mama said
Ā
