Mama's Train

Mama's Train

My sister and I had to be in bed by nine

I'd count the box cars rolling on by

to help me fall asleep

always told my mother before I went up the stairs

one day I'm going to ride those rails

The lonesome whistle plays like a song in my mind

I dream what it be like to ride in the pale moonlight

across bridges, through the woods, past cornfields

I'd call my mama up saying I'm having a good time

tell my sister I said "Hi"

Mama read us about pirates and the seven seas

before we would fell asleep

but I'd rather hear about Casey Jones

he was a rolling stone, engineering his train down the line

I'd ride with him from South Alabama to Northern Alaska

through the pale moonlight

across bridges, through the woods, past cornfields

I'd call my mama up saying I'm having a good time

tell my sister I said "Hi"
