Masquerade

Masquerade

Where are they all?
I can't hear a sound.
They've left now, all gone.
There's no-one around.
What of the promise,
to love and support?
They snared me with lies.
In their trap I was caught.
Cossetted, cared for, 
life was sublime.
Tiny hope sparked,
for a life free of crime.
But, as is my wont,
I performed for them all.
Donning my guise
for their masquerade ball.
I did all they asked.
Mastered each trick.
Gave the illusion
of not being sick.
For them, I got 'better'.
so they could relax.
Smile fading fast,
as they all turned their backs.
Why did I do this?
Keep hidden the truth?
So they saw me 'healing'.
I gave them their 'proof'......
