Memory

Memory

The memory of her smile bounced around his brain,
She had been the new kid at school,
The one who had beat him when he was at his best,
She was his new neighbour, the oddball, the loser. his friend.

She was the one who convinced him that they needed their own place,
A place where they could let their imaginations run wild,
He had been reluctant at first, as it seemed too childish in his eyes,
However, he slowly opened up to the idea of a kingdom where they could rule as King and Queen,
A place that could only be accessed by swinging on an enchanted rope across a deep ravine.

She helped him to see the kindness in people he long since forgot,
She encouraged his artistic talents when no one else did.
He had been away at an art gallery when it happened,
The ravine had flooded,
She had tried to swing on the enchanted rope by herself, but instead plummeted into the raging waters below,
Now their kingdom was without its Queen and he was lost without her.
