The Metal Hearted Soldier

The Metal Hearted Soldier

He came to life, the soldier made of tin

The night after that which he had been made

His copper eyes caught sight of she who made him

His metal heart developed a desire

He wished to take his maker for his wife

But she was frightened by the fact he lived

This was not a normal sight to see

She had never wanted him to breathe

A man composed of tin should not be living

She spurned him based entirely on her shock

The sculpture walked towards the open fire

And placed his arm among the quivering flames

Wishing to release himself from life

His frame took up formation a heart

The fire engulfed him and soon was gone

*Based on Hans Christian Anderson's short story the Steadfast Tin Soldier
