Midnight Memory

Midnight Memory

As I was coming home last night

I was stopped

by flashing red lights.

My heart started racing

frozen and still

staring out into the night

my mind rushing

back in time.

I watched as

the bright light came near,

your voice I could hear

softly echoing in my ear.

I started gasping for air

but couldn't catch my breath,

closed my eyes tight

and layed my head back to rest.

Then it came,

so loud, so strong

piercing my ears

and shaking me whole.

I opened my eyes

so that I could see

the sound that was

quickly overtaking me.

And there you stood,

so soft and pale

full of sadness in your eyes.

Shocked, I couldn't believe,

then I remembered;

it all came flooding back.

So unreal, more like a dream.

You left without any answers,

taking your own life

into your hands.

But you will always be remembered,

like it was some sort of plan.

I closed my eyes again

until I could no longer hear

the sound of the railroad crossing,

or metal on the tracks.

Only opening them to see

nothing but darkness

all around me.

Just a memory now again,

one that will never end

and this feeling deep within

knowing I'll never

see you here again.
