The Mirror

When I met you, your loneliness greeted my senses with..

That spicy smell of a rainforest in need of a drink
That peculiar contrast of a bare tree in a smoky, desert sunset
That particular call of the cow as her vealer is pulled to the yards
That last brush of lips and the loved hand as I boarded the plane
The fancy lolly I should not have taken but felt obliged to eat

Discomfort that drove…

A wish to hug that sadly could only be construed as inappropriate
A word of reassurance that would be regrettably taken the wrong way
A painful past memory to surface and rebound around my thoughts for days
A drop of moisture to collect in my eyes as I watched you

Me to believe….

I could help in some way
I was some kind of answer
I was able to reach out and break though all those barriers

I was wrong…..

You had not built the walls or obstructions
You weren’t lonely at all

So creating a mirror…..

In which I could only see myself
