The Misfits

You see that girl there?
The one whose head is ducked?
And is being called emo and a cutter?
She was three months clean when someone saw her scars
The ridicule caused her to relapse.

And do you see that boy there?
The one whose food is untouched?
And who spends every spare moment in the bathroom?
He had gained thirty pounds when someone found out his secret.
The ridicule caused him to relapse.

Oh, and that girl right there?
The one whose voice is hoarse?
And who is being asked about why she won’t be the lead in the musical?
She was the best singer before someone called her fat.
And now she’s doing her best to prove them wrong.

And please tell me you see that boy over there?
The one whose eyes are glazed over?
And whose water isn’t really water?
He drinks away the pain.
And no one ever bothered to care.

Do you see those siblings there?
The boy and the girl who are sticking close together despite the age gap?
And do you see the bruises that cover the boy’s body?
He got those from protecting his sister from the abuse.
And do you see her scars?
She blames herself for his bruises.
But everyone just pretends they’re fine.

Oh, and did you see the boy who was sleeping in class?
The one the teacher pretended not to see?
The one who is getting made fun of for his ratty clothes?
He works a night shift in order to provide for him and his sister.
Because their mom is strung out on drugs.

And that boy’s sister is the one who just relapsed.
And his best friend is the boy with the bruises.
And his sister is dating the boy with the eating disorder.
And he’s dating the girl with the hoarse voice.
And his sister is best friends with his best friend’s little sister.
And his best friend’s little sister is dating the drinker.

And even though they all struggle with something,
They all care about one another.
Because no one else bothers to care.
They’re the Misfits.
