Missed human connection on the overnight sleeper (story of my life)

Missed human connection on the overnight sleeper (story of my life)

I sit alone at the station
watching raindrops, piercing dark
It's cold and I'm soaked through
Another lonely Tuesday night
Overpriced coffee
Offers temporary salvation
Catch the eye of the night guard
Guess he's doing alright

My train is delayed
No reasonable explanation
Hollow empty promises
Match the holes in my shoes
Know where I'm going
But no clue when I'll get there
Guess I need provocation
What is a boy to do

Train finally pulls in
All noise and condensation
Climb into the carriage
See that I'm still alone
Overnight sleeper
From Glasgow down to Bristol
It's as good a place as any
When you don't have no home

Incoming maelstrom
Aphrodite in purple
Broken umbrella
Catches me in the eye
She apologises sweetly
Brushes wet hair from her face
She don have to use words though
I recognise that sigh

Guess I should try and
Strike up conversation
Ask her for a drink or,
At least catch her name
She said it was Jenny
But it could have been Honey
Dancing this way, ain't easy
When you're long out the game

Well Jenny or Honey
Will you go to my destination?
Maybe when we get there
We can talk away our blues
Cos Jenny or Honey
Your eyes don't hide your sadness
Maybe we're both unlucky
Or just born to lose

I try to crack a joke
But it sounds misdirected
I look embarrassed
As you get up to go
Jenny or Honey
This could have been something special
But I guess we weren't destined
To star in the same show

By myself once again
See my reflection in the window
My skins far too pale
And my eyes don't look right
Another missed connection
All part of my journey
So I watch raindrops racing
off into the night.
