Mulatto'1619

Mulatto'1619

I am a product of hate and everyone sees that
They see my color just as much as yours
I was born out of a night of cries, dark screams in the night
The reminder etched unto my skin
So when you look at me and tell me that I don't know what it feels like...
look again
Because I am the consequence of the pain brought unto you
And now I am hated by not only whites, but blacks too.
I work this plantation farm just as much as you.
But my skin burns.
Daddy tried to cool it down once,
But the scolds of his wife burnt me 10 times harder,
Because I am nothing but a mistresses daughter.
A mistress that didn't want to be a mistress.
Mummy can't look at me in the eyes
She turns away, she still tries her best to love me, but I know she knows that I know that she can't do it
I know she knows that I know that she can't do it.
Neither accepted here nor there
I am a product of my fathers passionate hate
A hate so deep that it snatched my mothers soul and placed it into me
I was punished with something seen as a blessing on you
A curse on me
A sin for us two

Hey LILAWRITES!!......this touched me deep inside instantly!!...... My mother is white and my father is black....... they were married in 1959 when I was born.......I Lived all over the world because my father was military...... you can imagine what it was like for an interracial couple during the 60's and 70's.......we moved every three years and EVERYWHERE I went it was the same 'ol story...... fighting for acceptance by both races....... Hate was a part of every day life...... Blacks didn't like me because I spoke " too white' ........and whites didn't like me because of the color of my skin...... now that is most assuredly the simplified version because there was ALOT more to my story.... I've recently recorded a song about it called " Mulatto Run" and I've written many poems about it....... with the outline of a book called " MULATTO RUN" as well......I don't know if your poem was a fiction or if you were writing about someone else...... but if you were writing about yourself and your personal experiences then there is MUCH more I could share with you..... but right now I feel like I'm rambling on & on when really I should be letting you know what a powerfully compelling piece of poetic prose you've delivered here.......ALL STARS!!...... well done dear poet sister!!..... and .....WELCOME to COSMO!!.....I Look forward to redoing more from you.......LOVE & ROCKETS!!.....T xo

Hey Tony, Thankyou for all the wonderful comments! Reading about some of your families history was amazing. I'm so glad you were able to relate to the poem, what inspired it, funnily enough was a TV show. Watching it made me realise that, in society (especially modern) when mixed race people talk about the struggles of identifying, people often dismiss it as ''melodramatic'' or far-fetched, however, forgetting that we too have a history. Thanks once again :D x
