My Brother Dan

My brother Dan
From above you look down with a smile,
All the difficulties you faced no longer a trial. You were born into this world and our family as number two,
And life threw, pains, and hardship at you.
To our mother,
You were no longer just our brother.
But a lifetime shoulder to bare and care,
All our extra burdens that we needed to share, as our real father was never there.
You were the older brother, a father and a friend,
With these character traits you would always try to extend.
As a husband you gave your all, More loyal a man you cannot find at all.
You worked hard and always came home with a smile,
For Beverley you loved so dearly, Who would always wait for you surely.
You always walked hand in hand,
Like teenagers in Love and always grand.
You shared special moments together without discern,
That many couples can only begin to learn
. As a father you always tried your best,
Many a moment you wanted to give up but this you could not digest.
You are a father to three, Oldest one was a she.
Your daughter Candice who you loved so dearly,
Has grown to be the person that you wanted clearly.
In your image she is you the same,
For your strictness she has no blame.
Your second was a son, Named Daniel after your own,
You had many difficulties and many chances were blown.
But you never gave up and tried your best,
Now that you are gone he will begin to digest,
That he was loved nevertheless
. Your third son named Chris
, As the younger he gave you much bliss.
Time will tell as he learns your ways,
As what you tried to teach him hopefully stays.
For the grandchildren you knew,
Their love for you and yours for them shone through.
Your children in-law,
As to your kids they are married for sure,
They cared and loved you dearly
, Because in you, they confided sincerely.
You guided them as a father too,
Because for them you were their pillar of strength too.
For many a friend of your children you were their support,
And gave advice without less sort.
Children would gather around you for your strength,
And this you would definitely give at any length.
As a brother you were always there,
For us your thoughts and emotions you would hardly share.
We had moments of sadness, and pain,
For this is life after all sometimes it would pour and sometimes just rain.
We had many happy moments of laughter, to share,
We loved as a family should as we did care.
As a pillar of strength to the family and all,
You continued in life’s path without stall.
As part of the church as a warden,
You gave your best without burden.
To live and walk in Jesus’ footprints,
I believe you achieved the best without a sprint.
Dan our brother, father and friend,
We will sorely miss you but this is not the end.
As you will be in our hearts and minds forever,
Till the day we meet again,
Goodbye our trusted friend for us it will continue to rain.
God be with you as you deserve,
For life and family and God you did serve.

Holy God MARK!!!!!!....this is an INCREDIBLE tribute to someone that was obviously so much to so many........the way you took the time to write about his interactions with SO MANY loved ones is such a loving gesture.......and then on top of it all........you maintained a great sense of poetic timing and rhythm........I would bet that if this were read aloud.......in the appropriate circumstance.......there would silence and tears flowing from anyone within earshot ........I can't say enough about how beautiful this is..........wow.............truly, lovingly, beautiful............Love to you...........T xo
Thank you Tony - yes, my brother and I were very close and he was a friend, the sudden loss has been a huge blow to the family and I. We miss him dearly. This poem was read out at his eulogy, I had many a person enquiring.
This was a private poem but I felt that because he was so close to me I would make it available to all.
The poem by Mark Paul van der Merwe makes a nice tribute and within domestic portrait, Dan, Beverley, Candice, Daniel and Chris are presented with a form of poetry from the hands of its author, five names and five stories United by a family tie, a surname and the love of their hearts.
There are ties of kinship of love and hatred, as we protect the bonds of love, hate ties us poison and make us miserable.
A greeting.
Dear Mark,
This is a really beautiful, superb piece and I`m sure your brother and whole family and also your friends were very touched by it. I`m sure your precious brother is very proud of you and your family and I am also sure that he is always with you in spirit and that God is protecting him till you all meet again. This is a superbly well thought out and beautifully well written piece and you are a talented writer. I`m certain that everyone who reads it appreciates you sharing such a personal and beautiful tribute to Dan.
Lots of love and hugs
