My Disappearance

My Disappearance

The days get shorter, and the nights get shorter,
Struggling always to find what my thoughts are.
Chicken or hake? The choice is so hard,
I'm starting to think that it's all a facade.

I look in the mirror and I look the same, although I still feel like I'm playing a game.
The house help comes in to potter about,
Tells me if i need her, to give her a shout.

Next I'm dressed and gazing through the window
What am I watching? I really don't know
Along comes a chap, asking "tea or coffee?"
And before I know it, my mouth has said "toffee"...

I laugh to myself, thinking have I gone daft?
Although I'm lucky to have such lovely staff
Breakfast, lunch, dinner... they're all the same
I ask for my family but am told they have came.

It's the next day, and I'm ready to get up
The same chap comes in and says "good luck"
I ask what he means and he laughs and says
"I don't know where you are Olive, but it's time for bed"

Confused as a goldfish, I get in my nightdress
Feeling old, and funny, and tired and useless
Am I left or right, or in the centre??
Every day is a challenge, when you're living with dementia.

Confused as a goldfish...

This is a very neat and elegant analogy for the slow forgetting of dementia.
The whole piece approaches the subject from inside the mind of the sufferer; knowing and not knowing...seeing the world out of clouded eyes. You make it funny, without cruelly laughing at her; which is harder to do than you might think!

An enjoyable, thought-provoking read.

Hi Tyler,  I understand this poem is based on your personal experience ### it is an old life related disease,  its symptoms are so subtle,  so sad really ## but your humorous approach can lighten the burden of the disease ##

thanks for sharing
