My Familiar friend

Each passing day sees a small but perceivable change….An extra wrinkle here and there,
But I would tell you it’s a laughter line- a clear sign of levity.
For so many years I never really looked at that face that launched a thousand zits,
I loved it from a distance
But wished I had known it sooner.
But as time went by I saw the beauty in your slightly crooked smile,
The perfect, even teeth and the slowly developing double chin…
That persistent single hair that always needs a tweeze before you exit into the outside world
These small details all make yours a face that I could recognise with my eyes closed
By touch alone
A face like no other, one that smiles at me, cries with me, frowns and glares at me
Whose bleary eyes tell a tale of too many dirty martini’s and late nights
I love that face, If I don’t love it who would ?
Ah I see you looking at me…don’t you just love mirrors?

The gentle mocking and close attention to detail are a particularly clever touch; leading the reader up your primrose path right to the very end: then comes the delicious reversal/reveal...which is a remarkably rewarding payoff.
I think we can all recognise ourselves in this mirror...as it changes that little bit every day ... Bugger!!
Very nicely done...

Hi Jason..so pleased you enjoyed it...I love writing something with a slanted comedy touch- it's a real departure from the sometime much more serious, sadder side of life .. mind you I wasn't sure about sharing some aspects of my mirror image- that bloody single chin hair is the bane of my life..but I guess I'm amongst friends :) Thank you for your lovely comments! xxx
