My Friend

So small but yet so proud displaying his bright red chest
With many species of birds he is truly one of the best
Sitting in places of prominence watching the world go by
Giving a look of approval with his beady little eye
Some find comfort in believing he's the spirit of a loved one passed
Protecting the soul of the mourner enabling memories to last
Such a mysterious existence he is gone in the blink of an eye
But almost as if he knows he returns if he senses you cry
He is special to so many people who he returns to see every day
Loyal little friend with the red breast my loved one forever will stay
