MY GUY

Guy Fawkes...
as a young catholic
he fought against the Dutch.
and I made an effigy
to burn him with fury, flame
and such,
I made him from dads
old clothes, I made him
tall strong and butch..
with rabbit straw for
innards..and his face
was pale, his loyal eyes
I did not want to see
scorned and tossed
on stacks of pilgrim wood
that they torch on mass
his name ..still bright
four hundred years plus
he's blazed across the night
for a crime than never was,
he never scorched the blue
touch..it fizzled out
but not their temper !
the plot that never was
let him be hang drawn
and quarted let him rot
but no ..not Guy
he threw himself from
the gallows high and
died before the deed
let this be a lesson to
the peasants..
and this poor sod..
the laws of the land
are mightier than those of God

Hi Lorna..no I don't get to see much iif any TV....but I will have a look on replay later..xx glad you liked the Bommy Night poem..mischievous night..the night before the 5th..that used to be fun..Americans pinched it for trick o treat...
Wonderfully wry, irreverent and idiomatic...as usual!
We don't don't mark Bonfire Night in Ireland...though a lot of us would have a sneaking regard for Guy Fawkes' ultimate goal.
Personally, I've always liked that line from the Fawkes inspired V for Vendetta: "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people."
J ;)
I didnt want to burn him then..and I dont now...what fools on mass we are..but not if the government looks after its people..its when corruption is rife..lol like always.
Thanks for your comments..I saw replay Gunpowder last night..horrible.. that's religious zealots for control and power nothing to do with God..its a wonder we ever evolved from the scratchings of the earth..or did we..? Horrible they were to ordinary persons..
