my house
my house is built, flesh upon flesh
bone upon bone
an island in the sun
ย is my ancestral home
my grandfather was born on the sea
of Portuguese descent was he
on a ship bound to Trinidad
on the blue Sargasso Sea
and 100 Trinidadian claimedย he
He grew up and met a woman named May
from St. Vincent was she
had a child name Molly
who had one child, me
and 100 percent Trinidadian was she
my father was born on a ship
coming from St. Vincentย ย ย ย
on that same Blue Sargasso Sea
he is African, Portuguese, French
Carib Indianโฆand 100 percent Trinidadian,
claimedย he
They both came to Canada
Selwyn and Molly
Not together, separately
Christopher came to Toronto in 1973
Was raised by his mother
Single-handedly
he often dreams of Trinidad
And that Blue Sargasso Sea
Forever it remains a cherished memory
though 100 percent Canadian is he
