My mask

Skulls are hideous and frightening
Reminding us of what monsters we areunderneath
This mask of skin that hides the truth
Can be shaped into any disguise
But peel back the flesh

I find your choice of title interesting. My mask implies this is a first person poem rather than saying the mask as the title. Or is the reader meant to sort of take ownership of the poem. Or am I, as is my way, reading far too much into the words?
Either way it is an impactful piece of writing. "The mask of skin that hides the truth" is a great line. And I love the last word being lies rhyming with disguise, probably the two most important words in the poem.Ā
