The Neighbor

Bitter wind blows
Nights fall too soon
To keep herself warm
She lives in one room
Winters now hard
Youth long gone past
Chilled to the bone
Health failing fast
The fire on one bar
Cost to keep down
Wrapped up in layers
And an old dressing gown
The cooker lays dormant
A sandwich for tea
Cup of hot chocolate
Her one luxury
No visitors call
Nobody cares
Would anyone notice
If she wasn’t there
One stormy night
The snow falling fast
Fate came to call
A neighbor walks past
Milk on the doorstep
Curtains still drawn
Alarm bells ringing
Something is wrong
Approaching the house
He knocked on the door
Nervously waiting
What was in store
Guilt racked his mind
He’d not been before
To see the old lady
Who lived just next door
It seemed like an age
Time standing still
Was it too late
This act of goodwill
He knocked once again
Stood for a while
The door slightly opened
The old lady smiled
Relief washed right through him
To see her alive
He vowed to keep calling
And help her survive

Powerful heartfelt poetry my sweet friend Susan Worrall, well done, everything about this is so charismatic and i love it, i watch over my neighbours, as they come and go, the more frail of age, I'm so glad it was a happy ending, just made my night completely, my vote five stars and favorite love and hug's nardine xoxo
Thankyou Nardine I wish all were like you looking after neighbors. I just hope the poem inspires others to think of all those pensioners alone this winter x
