New Year's Resolution

New Year's Resolution

My mind ponders what to resolve

A long abandonedΒ friend that I should call

Perhaps a habit from which to abstain

Or a character trait that I should gain

Take time to work on a future goal

Maybe help some deeply troubled soul

Each year’s scenario starts anew

A token symbol of things to do

But before the month is barely done

The resolutions fade off one by one

Nothing much will change I realize

My human nature will improvise

As do most people I suppose

My good intentions I will dispose

With valid reasons to carry on

Each day passing as they have done

Same as each year and year before

I tried, I failed, I try once more
