Poem -

Night

I look out at the gathering darkness

Shadows walk - creeping, slithering, fluid

But shadows of what? There is no one there

The all consuming darkness eats away

Only a blue shimmering moon to keep it at bay

Tenticled, spindly, branches reaching like arms

Shivering in the cold damp breeze Like the breath of the winter freeze

Echoing sounds, reverberate through the night

Heart beating faster with attendant fright

Purple, black clouds gather above Deepening the lightless sky I speed up.

Faster. Casting furitive glances Taking no chances

The wind now howling, the buildings scowling I'm running now, all pretense lost

I feel the need to stop, but what may be the cost?

The echoes follow, faster, keeping pace

The wind is louder - taunting.

And then I see it, the green door of home

Shelter from the streets I roam.

I reach out with a fumbling key, it's difficult to see

But it opens, the glorious yellow glow pours out

With an involuntary shout I'm safe and warm again.
