No One Knows Yesterday Existed

No one knows yesterday existed.
Actually – no one's got to know anyhow,
They can go on drinking their tea and biscuits
"Pass the butter" they say with a polite frown,
Dab their mouths with a handkerchief,
Click on the news and cluck their tongues,
At whatever maniac drunkenly drove off a cliff,
And killed his family, left all alone
Wishing, God he wishes, no one knew yesterday existed—
That he wouldn't have to share his shame with the world.
I'm luckier than that because (God!)Â
No one knows about my yesterday.
Except, perhaps, God but he won't tell,Â
He never does.Â
I've died before, I think it's getting easier,Â
No one knows it happened again last night –
No one knows and I need not remember
Why? Why we slink to the dark corners of our minds—
Maybe it's because we dance with the ghost of yesterday
For everyone who should've known—
And the day before that and then the rest
That we thought we'd long forget.
We tried, we didÂ
But we make our own demons— I'm convinced—
And they don't like to be ignored.
No one knows yesterday existed.Â
I'm not so vain to dump my painÂ
On the suffering world—
I'll carry it in my chest,
Then I'll carry it with me beyond death,
And lay my head upon the rock
Of everything that could have existedÂ
If I had not.Â
