Arrogant Hearts
Do we know not how to feel remorse?
Such narcissists, to ride a horse
Which is our life
And forget to feed and water it
But of course
We know only to pillage and plunder
Our sacred home, this earth,
Know only to force this birth-
place of ours under our feet.
To label ourselves the wisest,
Can we not call ourselves biased
To proclaim we are the highest
Of all sentient beings?
But no, to the arrogant hearts,
We are the only rulers here
All else is for us to strip into parts
And destroy.
We are the murderers of ourselves
For our work will come back
One day
To meet its maker.
Why would we presume to think
That God gave us rule to miss the link
That to care for such a rare
Place as this
Our lives
Too must we dare
Too look beyond ourselves,
Our arrogant hearts,
And care for the birds and beasts and air.
Only in the most arrogant hearts
Such as these of ours
Could the illusion remain
Without disillusion
That we are wisest of all
When we have doomed us all
Destroyed our home
Our only place to live
The custodian of all beings
But not just us
The arrogant hearts.
