Parkinson's takes you a bit at a time

Parkinson's takes you a bit at a time

Parkinson's takes you
a little bit at a time
at first you're medications
they make you feel just fine

there's no real side effects
it's almost like you're cured
everything is fantastic
And you are really reassured

then a little tremor
some weakness or a twitch
A little increase in your tablets
then once again
your fears you ditch

then instead of an increase
you may be given a patch
once you get on that
it's a feeling nothing else can match

but the good times don't last long
and soon your medications have increased a lot
then the side effects start
and it hits home now
what you've got

the words degenerative condition
and incurable, then hit home
all of a sudden this is real
the easy stage has now gone

then you have a fight on your hand
now you are at war
if you aren't strong enough
then thats when you give up and fall

Parkinson's takes a bit of you
a little bit at a time
sometimes it's something physical
Sometimes it's part of your mind

everything it takes
you have to accept and mourn
slowly the pain increases
and at times you wish
you were never born

then there's the anxiety
the depression and the fear
the hallucinations and the night terrors
struggling to sleep and needing care

all this going on
and you pretend to be alright
cos you don't want loved ones to worry
as you start to lose the fight

you become quite an expert
at hiding behind a mask
that fake smile and I'm fine
you perfect for when someone asks

but life continues
and you cant let it go by
you need to live as much as you can
there's no time left to sit and cry

avoid stress if you can
an iron will is a must
a sense of humour essential
so is enjoyment, love and trust

throughout this journey
I have discovered
how strong I can be
I have realised I'm so lucky
and I've learnt a lot more about me
